Engagement 'No Touch' Session: 5 Tips

So a few weeks ago I got handed a photography challenge that I was so excited to accept.  I was commissioned to shoot an engagement session where the couple never touched, due to a vow that they won't touch until after the wedding.  Well I immediately started looking online for pose ideas, and man was I disappointed with the selection.  Evidently engagement sessions now a days are more like make out sessions.  I really was getting aggravated at not having any resources pop up on google, bing, or pinterest.  So, I got creative and used my own brain and wrote down lots of new ideas for the session.  Now I am here to share them with you and be your resource incase anyone wants the same thing!

1.  Create Intimacy:  Okay, you just said they couldn't touch... so how do you create intimacy?  Great question!  You can easily create intimacy by having your subjects looking at each other.  It gives a closeness to the composition with out the subjects actually having to touch.  Here are some examples....

2.  Use Props: Most infant photographers know the best photo session have props because there is only so much you can do with a sleeping baby.  Same philosophy here.  There is only so much you can do with two people who aren't touching so use props.  Another tip is to have the couple hold the same prop so they are connect to some extent.  Here are some examples....

3. Use Artistic Flair:  Do what you do best as a photographer on go out on a creative limb.  For this session I really wanted to try a silhouette shot.  If you don't have the lighting for a silhouette try something else like a lens flare, or rich shadows.  Here is my non touching silhouette...

4.  Search for locations that have visual interest: When looking for locations search for someplace that has several different elements to it.  Parks are usually great because they have fields, fences, benches, walls, trees, etc.  We were very lucky that God gave us a great sunset that day so we had some great sky colors too.  Here are a few examples of visually interesting locations...

5.  Bodies Facing In:  Another way to add visual interest to your photos and get an intimate feel is to have the couple face their bodies in toward each other.  Here are some examples...

I hope this helps you if you should ever have a 'no touch' engagement session like I did :)
